Volunteer For Us
Broken Rainbow UK runs the only National LGBT Domestic Violence Helpline. Volunteering for us will give you a chance to get involved with a charity, and give you a chance to stretch your skills, and gain valuable work experience.
We will ensure that Volunteers are recruited fairly, and suited to the work on offer. We will also provide an induction, and training as appropriate. We ask in return that the Volunteer also delivers on their commitment in terms of times, and duration so that work and projects can be completed.
We are always looking for committed individuals for these volunteering roles at Broken Rainbow UK:
Office based volunteers
As a national organisation, we get involved in a wide range of projects; for example coordinating Prides, festivals and events, promoting our services via social network sites, marketing, designing materials and writing our E-Newsletter.
In order to deliver our work, there is a substantial amount of admin related work which is necessary, and for which we need help from volunteers. As a BR Volunteer, you can get involved and support us on a regular basis, or support one-off events like Pride.
The role
The primary role of the Admin Volunteer will be to help with daily office tasks which can include:
- Assist in promoting Broken Rainbow’s Helpline
- Develop our presence on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter;
- Assist in organising events, help preparing the Pride season
- Assist in producing and advertising our Quarterly e-newsletter
- Designing web banners, leaflets, posters…
- General administrative tasks (answering the phone, sending leaflets, actioning general emails, etc)
- Updating Mailing Lists and sending out physical or virtual mailshots
Skills/Qualifications
Potential Volunteers for the above post must have:
- IT literacy skills; good level of competency in Word, Outlook.
- General office experience; answering phone, mail, filing.
- Good command of English, written, and spoken
- Commitment to all Broken Rainbow policies, and our aims and objectives eg, challenge inequality, and raising awareness of LGBT people’s experience of Domestic Violence.
Availability
Flexible: we are open office hours only so hours and days are flexible within office hours.

Helpline Volunteers
General purpose of the job: to provide high quality, comprehensive helpline support to callers with regard to LGBT related Domestic Violence.
The post
The postholder will join a team of LGBT volunteers & sessionals on a rota basis to answer calls on our national LGBT DV Helpline from LGBT people experiencing domestic violence.
Key tasks are to provide a high quality service which includes active listening, non judgemental support, risk assessment, and safety planning advice to callers experiencing domestic violence.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To provide helpline support in line with Broken Rainbow UK’s LGBT National Domestic Violence Helpline service.
- To assess risk and give appropriate safety planning advice.
- To signpost callers to relevant agencies.
- To work closely with Broken Rainbow UK volunteers and staff.
- To collect monitoring data, and recording all calls / enquiries as required.
- To attend supervision and debriefing sessions, and other meetings as required.
- To participate in ongoing training.
- To adhere to all Broken Rainbow UK and Helpline policies and procedures.
- To maintain confidentiality at all times.
- To operate within the organisational diversity and codes of conduct.
- Carry out any other duties as requested in relation to the effective development of the Helpline service and policies.
Hours
3 hours per week (one session) minimum. Plus other hours on ad hoc basis.
We are looking to increase cover on:
- Monday and Thursday 2pm – 5pm;
- Wednesday 10am – 5pm
